The unviewable exhibition

Posted in Books at 2:23 pm by

The field of vision narrowed radically; each artifact was visually available in utmost clarity, but tightly framed in a pale and featureless fog, each visitor becoming “the blind librarian”.

That’s William Gibson describing the cunningly constructed display cases at the Borges and Buenos Aires exhibition in Barcelona; and making a decent stab at Borges’ style while he’s at it. Did you catch it, Andy?

Actually I went along to the CCCB yesterday but they had odd opening hours for the exhibition so I spent hours in the bookshop instead. Oh what a bookshop. Unfortunately his website doesn’t do him justice, but when I go back I’m definitely getting Marti Guixe’s (www.guixe.com) book of food inventions. Lots of Borges stuff in there too, naturally.

However, the exhibition is on until Feb 14th (I think) and I fully intend to stop off their soon.

Incidentally I saw that Gibson was in town, shortly before I arrived. Sorry I missed him, naturally.

Just got back from the exhibition; Gibson was right and more. The exhibition was remarkable for reflecting Borgesian ideas in its design and makeup. The cabinets were laid out like mazes, there was a fantastic recreation of the infinite library in a small mirrored room, and lots of lots of his stuff. If, like Gibbo, you honk if you love Borges, then get yourself over here pronto. Remarkable stuff.

You lucky, lucky man. I hope that, at least, you’ve grabbed a catalogue for the rest of us. Or was it the catalogue for a completely different, imaginary exhibition?

Or perhaps when one of us makes it over to Barcalona, the place will deny that they have ever had a Borges exhibition?

    Or…
