Here we go again

Snow. The sky is white, white stuff is falling out of it, and quite a lot of white stuff has already fallen. Fortunately this state of affairs was anticipated by the Met Office, and so yesterday we posted the last presents and bought a considerable variety of food and drink. There was a bit of snow yesterday afternoon, enough to make a light dusting on the ground, and somewhere around midnight, I was outside with a torch and Miss Kit, having an argument. Miss Kit: ‘the ground’s cold and damp and horrid’. Me: ‘have a crap. I’ve seen the weather forecast and you haven’t’ Miss Kit: [half-hearted scraping, curls into miserable little ball] ‘Noooo’ . . . . So I gave up in the end and we went in. And now there is LOTS of snow and nothing has got any better and we will spend the rest of the day having a Bowels Drama. It’s all most annoying and predictable. However we have plenty of time for having a Bowels Drama since we are most certainly not going anywhere for a while.

We are having a snowstorm, too. We’re at about 20″ and expect a few more tonight. It looks lovely. Ginny the cat uses the litter box in the laundry room and never goes outside, so we get to skip the Bowels Drama. Louise the cat lived in the northwoods with us years ago; she would go out in any weather, snow of any depth, when it was time, rather than use the litterbox. Not that she got far from the house to do so!

Abyssinian cats seem to have a natural tendency towards ‘litterbox: no way’. Miss Kit isn’t the first Abyssinian of my acquaintance to take this attitude, though her predecessor Miss Cat in dire emergency would avail herself of the compost beds in the greenhouse, which Miss Kit has not yet got the hang of.

I didn’t know that about Abyssinians; cats are strange little creatures!
